Professor Zhou Guomo Attended the Katowice United Nations Climate Change Conference

Release time:December 12, 2018      Views:

From December 2 to 14, the 24th United Nations Climate Change Conference was held in Katowice, Poland. Professor Zhou Guomo of our university, a well-known domestic expert in forestry carbon sequestration research, was invited to attend the conference and to give an academic report based on the latest research findings. It is also the ninth consecutive year that he has been invited to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

On December 4, with the support and guidance of the Climate Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, China Green Carbon Foundation, International Network for Bamboo and Rattan, European Environment Association and Zhejiang A&F University held the first side meeting on the theme of "Multiple Benefit Carbon Trading to Promote Green Mountains and Clear Rivers to Create Economic Benefits". Zhou Guomo was invited to give a keynote speech on "Innovation of Bamboo Forest Carbon Sequestration and Bamboo Product Carbon Footprint Measurement".

Zhou Guomo expounded the distribution of bamboo forests in the world and their biological carbon storage to the representatives from all over the world. Based on investigation cases and technical analysis, he introduced carbon transfer, carbon emissions and carbon footprint of the whole life cycle of bamboo products in the post-harvest bamboo production process, as well as carbon storage of bamboo products at the national level. He pointed out that bamboo products are low carbon products with some being zero carbon emission products, and even carbon storage products, according to the difference between the carbon stored and released during the processing of bamboo products.

More than 90 delegates from more than 20 countries and regions, including Poland, the United States, Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Russia, etc. attended the first side meeting of China Pavilion. Many media, such as Xinhua News Agency, CCTV, China Daily, China News Service and Global Times, carried out live reports, and CCTV News Broadcast also reported on the event on the evening of December 6.

Professor Zhou Guomo is one of the earliest experts engaged in forest carbon sequestration and related fields in China. He is a well-known scholar in the field of carbon sequestration at home and abroad, especially in bamboo forest carbon sequestration. Zhou Guomo's team's series of research findings on forest carbon sequestration are in the international leading position, and have made positive and effective contributions to China's forestry in coping with climate change. With its related research findings, the team has won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the first prize of Zhejiang Science and Technology Progress Award.

Since 2012, Zhou Guomo's team has introduced the research findings on bamboo forest carbon sequestration, carried out personnel training and technical promotion in Africa, South America, etc. on many occasions, and provided technical support for relevant African countries in coping with climate change, forest restoration and poverty reduction. Xinhua News Agency once reported on Zhejiang A&F University: Contributing "Chinese Wisdom" to the Development of Bamboo Industry in African Countries.
